wifeandpartner: (The Red Panda)

For a moment, the basement is utterly silent. The Red Panda stares at the spot where his partner stood mere seconds before. The cloaked figure seems to be staring as well, although it's difficult to tell through the hood. The apprentice is sent in the master's place, it muses. One hopes that she is strong enough to--

With a roar of rage, the Red Panda sprints across the room to pin the cloaked figure up against the wall. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER?!" he shouts. "Tell me or I'll..."

But there's no one there. What the Red Panda holds in his hands is nothing but an empty robe. "Of course," he mutters to himself, throwing the robe aside. "Looks like I'm going to have to go elsewhere for answers. And I know just where to start..."

"Michael Jacobi."

"Wha--?" Jacobi turns, then rolls his eyes. "Oh, it's you. That figures."

The Red Panda is unfazed by Jacobi's blasé reaction. "You have deceived an agent of justice, Michael Jacobi... and now you must pay the penalty."

"Look, it wasn't my idea, okay? The guy in the cloak, he said there was somethin' big goin' down tonight. Somethin' that could take out whole planet, or worse, if you weren't there to help out! I couldn't say 'no' ta that, could I?"

"Then why the deception? Why not tell us what we're up against?"

"I don't know! That's all he told me!" Jacobi is frantic. The last thing he wants is a full 'interrogation' from the man in the mask. "I swear to God, I don't know nothin' else about it. You want answers, go talk to the Council of Magicians or whatever."

The Red Panda looks stunned. "The Council of Mages? They orchestrated this?"

"So I've been told," says a tired-sounding, faintly Scottish-accented voice from behind him. "For as much as they dislike meddling in mortal affairs, they do seem to do it quite often."

The Red Panda turns to see a stout, grey-bearded gentleman in a cloak and a half-mask... who happens to be faintly translucent. "The Stranger. I should've known they'd call on you as well. How did you know where to find me?"

"Lady Pri'ann contacted me when her associate's spell went awry. I made an educated guess that you would be dressing down the informant who led you to the meeting place." The apparition glances over the Red Panda's shoulder. "Incidentally, he seems to be making a break for it."

"I'll deal with him later. What was that spell? If the Flying Squirrel's been hurt--"

"Not at all. She is quite well, for the time being. However, bringing her back home might prove... difficult. Particularly given the task she has been charged with."

"Back from where? And what task?"

"If you'll be patient a moment, Red Panda," says the Stranger with a wry smile, "all shall be made clear. Now, tell me... have you heard of a place called 'Milliways'?"
